For the second year in a row, the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival — held in downtown Springfield — has been cancelled.

The decision was made after a recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Springfield and the surrounding area, which has been further compounded by the region’s low vaccination rates and the fast-spreading Delta variant. The festival was scheduled to be held on August 13–14, 2021.

The festival drew around 65,000 visitors in 2019. However, it was expected to draw around 75,000 visitors this year.

But, I’ll say it again at the risk of sounding rude:

There must be 50 ways to keep COVID free -

And wear yours on the bus, Gus,

To keep COVID free!

Avoid touching your face, Grace,
